A central tenet of Opti's value proposition is the ability to trust that Opti-managed assets will convey water as expected. Opti considers security throughout the design, development, and operations of the Opti Platform.
Security starts with a mindset; therefore, security must start in system design. We employ a "less is more secure" mentality. Specifically:
- No open ports or inbound connections to devices
- No local network presence required
- No remote desktop
- No passwords managed by Opti - Single Sign-On through Azure Active Directory allows customers to stay in control of their users' access
- Minimal PII required - Only the email address of end-users and alert recipients are required
- No unpredictable fail-safes - Control hardware is designed/configured to revert to a position consistent with civil designs in the event of power or connectivity loss
- Cloud Redundancy - Opti Cloud Services are deployed across multiple fault zones within Microsoft Azure data centers for high availability. Opti's Cloud Services are hosted in environments that meet a broad set of industry-specific compliance standards, such as ISO 27011
- DDoS Protection and Rate Limiting
- Hardware-Backed and Auditable Certificate management
- No user access to remote sites - All remote operations managed via service-to-service application communications over Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and Websocket Protocol (WS)
Healthier Communities, Cleaner Watersheds
Opti is thrilled to announce the launch of our newly redesigned website. We are dedicated to delivering the outstanding environmental and economic outcomes that our communities deserve. Our world needs to move faster to succeed against the environmental challenges that face us. Technology will help get us there.
The new website is designed to be more reflective of Opti's mission and values. People and the environment are most important to Opti. Our new design proactively shares customer stories and resources in a more accessible, user-friendly format. We are ready to launch into a progressive, resilient and sustainable future. North Hudson Sewerage Authority (NHSA) treats 800 million gallons of wet weather flow per year in one of the most densely-populated areas of the U.S. Traditional water infrastructure had been insufficient in meeting the challenge of CSOs and flooding in the urbanized environment. Opti's Smart Watershed Network Management optimizes assets in the watershed for maximum performance. Implementing Opti technology saved NHSA 95% in capital expenditures, reduced average wet weather outflow by 75% and optimized storage by 30%. View the full case study here. Opti Fun Facts
Opti's data is backed up in
3 Microsoft data centers
Opti's CMAC field equipment has at least 3 redundancies to ensure safety and reliability
An Opti customer said, "Dave, we aren't comfortable with Opti's software because it's in the cloud." I asked, "What is the concern?" and the response was, "Software is not secure in the cloud. We need it in our data center." So I asked, "Where is your data center?" and I was given the street address and city, to which I responded, "Opti's software is distributed across three physically dispersed data centers hosted by Microsoft, and they don't publish addresses."
Digital security is a mindset. Physical location should not matter. Is the cloud secure? Absolutely. There are so many critical ingredients to digital security, well beyond the physical location of servers and disk drives. We have a series of redundant processes constantly monitoring our systems. Getting hacked is not a matter of 'if", it's a matter of 'when'. That is our mindset.
There is another type of security Opti builds into its system, related to public safety. Opti controls the conveyance of stormwater; therefore, we must ensure the public remains safe. Opti's software modules and capabilities go through an extensive series of tests related to system security and fail-safes. Security starts with a mindset.

Stormwater infrastructure, included for the first time in ASCE's 2021 Infrastructure Report Card, received a D rating. America's infrastructure has great room for improvement. Smart solutions must be implemented to optimize the current infrastructure and to meet modern challenges. Digital adoption in stormwater is key to keeping up with accelerating climate change and growing urbanization. Stormwater systems are essential to maintain water quality, keep pollutants out of waterways and mitigate flooding.
ASCE highlights the resilience and innovation real-time control systems offer, "Current innovations include the use of real-time control systems that leverage complex modeling, cloud computing, data storage and predictive analysis." The time is now for our industry to move with more speed and agility to address stormwater challenges. Opti's real-time control technology enables faster implementations and continuous adaption to meet the urgent demands to improve our infrastructure. Read the full report here.
